O local era um antigo convento que, segundo a lenda, foi fundado pelo pr\u00f3prio S\u00e3o Francisco de Assis no s\u00e9culo XIII. O rei Carlos III ordenou a constru\u00e7\u00e3o deste novo templo, projetado por Francisco Cabezas em 1761 e conclu\u00eddo por Francisco Sabatini e Miguel Fern\u00e1ndez em 1784. Em 1980 foi declarada Monumento Nacional da Espanha.
